Overview

The SME Education Foundation offers one of the largest and most accessible scholarship programs in the U.S. for students pursuing manufacturing-related technical careers. With a single application, students are automatically considered for more than 60 named scholarships, with awards ranging from $2,500 to $20,000.

These scholarships support students at all stages—high school seniors entering college, current community college students, and undergraduates preparing for careers in advanced manufacturing, engineering technology, automation, CNC/machining, mechatronics, robotics, and other technical fields.

Since 2005, the SME Education Foundation has awarded over $18 million to more than 5,000 students.

“The SMART Scholarship-for-Service Program is a combined educational and workforce development opportunity for STEM students. SMART offers scholarships for undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students pursuing a STEM degree. SMART offers two scholarship opportunities, the SMART Scholarship and the Ronald V. Dellums Memorial SMART Scholarship. All scholarship recipients receive full tuition, annual stipends, internships, and guaranteed civilian employment with the Department of Defense after graduation. There are two “missions” to complete before you can apply for Mission 3 of the NASA Community College Aerospace Scholars program.

Must have successfully completed the most recent NCAS Mission 1: Discover and NCAS Mission 2: Explore

Mission 1: Discover

  • U.S. Citizenship
  • High school graduate or equivalent
  • At least 18 years of age by beginning of Mission 1: Discover.
  • Currently attend a U.S. community college
  • Completion or concurrent enrollment of 9+ college credits of STEM coursework
  • Able to commit to a 5-week online session
  • Internet access
  • Have not previously participated in NCAS

Mission 2: Explore – Successful completion of previous Mission 1: Discover

Mission 3: Innovate – Successful completion of previous Mission 1: Discover and Mission 2: Explore

How to Apply

Next application period will open in October 2024. Check back for more information in mid-September.

To complete the NCAS application:

  1. Sign up or Log in to the NASA STEM Gateway.
  2. Explore Opportunities for College STEM Experiences.
  3. Apply for NCAS Mission 1: Discover.

You will need to provide:

  • Contact information.
  • Community college transcripts (official or unofficial) must include the following:
    • Your name.
    • Your school’s name.
    • 9 credits of college STEM courses, either completed or in-progress.
    • Proof of current enrollment.
  • 300-word (max) explanation of why you want to participate in NCAS.

Students Will Conduct Research and Technical Projects at National Laboratories Applications are currently being accepted for the Spring 2024 term of two programs offered by the Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science (SC): the Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internships (SULI) program and the Community College Internships (CCI) program. The application deadline for the two programs is Wednesday, October 4, 2023, at 5:00 p.m. EDT.

The Research Triangle Nanotechnology Network (RTNN) is looking to support (2) part-time internship opportunities for currently enrolled community college students to experience and learn laboratory skills at the NCSU Nanofabrication Facility (NNF) and/or the Analytical Instrumentation Facility (AIF) at NC State University. The NC State Nanofabrication Facility (NNF) is a Class 100 cleanroom  that provides semiconductor processing capabilities to academic, industrial, and government users. The facility possesses a full range of micro- and nano-fabrication capabilities, enabling research and small-scale manufacturing in several science and engineering disciplines, including electrical engineering, materials science, chemical/biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering, physics, textiles, and veterinary medicine. The AIF is NC State’s primary shared facility for materials characterization with a mission to enable and lead state-of-the-art research through acquisition, development, maintenance, training, and access to major analytical and materials characterization instrumentation.

Kavli Nanoscience Institute SURF-the-WAVE (STW) Prize Fellowships

The Kavli Nanoscience Institute (KNI) at the California Institute of Technology established the SURF-the-WAVE (STW) Prize Fellowships program to provide opportunities for motivated undergraduates who are interested in carrying out cutting-edge summer research projects in nanoscience at Caltech. In partnership with the Student-Faculty Programs (SFP) office and its WAVE summer program, KNI STW Prize Fellowships are awarded to undergraduates at non-Caltech colleges or universities who plan to pursue PhDs in science or engineering.

Caltech WAVE Fellows Program

The “Caltech WAVE” Fellows program provides support for talented undergraduates intent on pursuing a Ph.D. to conduct a 10-week summer research project at Caltech.
