DESCRIPTION:Title: Nanobiotechnology Workforce Training on a Shoe-String Budget \nSpeaker: Prof. Mrunalini Pattarkine\, Professor and Chair; Lead-Nanobiotechnology Initiative; Biotechnology\, Harrisburg University of Science and Technology \nDate/Time: March 9\, 2023\, 1 pm EST \nBio: Prof. Pattarkine has a PhD in Biochemistry from IIT Powai and has over 25 years of research experience. She has several publications and book chapters to her credit. Prof. Pattarkine also serves as the Director of Capital Area Biotechnology Partnership (CABP)\, a Workforce Leadership Grant in Biotechnology funded by PA Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED\, a $700\,000/-grant). She has conducted numerous workshops on STEM workforce development at national and international events\, for educators and administrators and is considered an expert in the field by the state administrators. \nAbstract: Nanotechnology is called the “Next Industrial Revolution”. Biotechnology is called as “The Science of the Millennium”. When these two powerful disciplines blend into nanobiotechnology\, one can only imagine the scope and opportunities that emerge. The industry has recognized the potential of this field and is already contributing several commercialized products generated using Nanobiotechnology. People use these products in their daily life\, without realizing the nanobiotechnology connection. Despite the need\, there is a severe deficiency of a nanobiotechnology trained workforce\, and it is a matter of great concern. The origin for this concern lies in lack of awareness about the skills\, education paths\, and career options for nanobiotechnology in the K-12\, as well as post-secondary education. Compounding the problem is the wide-spread myth that teaching nanotechnology is not possible without expensive instrumentation. \nThis webinar addresses this important matter. Learn how to use a scanning electron microscope remotely from your classroom’s computer \nDescription: In the last NanoEducators forum\, participants had the opportunity to zoom in on microscopy and its connections to chemistry\, physics\, biology\, and engineering using hands-on virtual research tools. The first session of this series offered an overview about nanoscience and how microscopy tools such as scanning electron microscopes can be brought directly into your classes remotely. In this second session\, Dr. Yves Theriault\, of the NSF-supported San Diego Nanotechnology Infrastructure\, will provide participants with hands-on experience controlling a scanning electron microscope remotely from their computer\, directly over Zoom\, without the need for additional software. Attendees will have the opportunity to image classroom-relevant samples\, such as pollen\, phytoplankton and zooplankton\, gecko’s feet\, an optical card\, and a butterfly’s wing. SUMMARY:Standalone stretchable device platform for human health monitoring
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Dr. Huanyu Cheng \nDate: November 16\, 2022 at 1 pm ET \nAbstract: Conventional electronics today form on the planar surfaces of brittle wafer substrates and are not compatible with 3D deformable surfaces. As a result\, stretchable electronic devices have been developed for continuous health monitoring. Practical applications of the next-generation stretchable electronics hinge on the integration of stretchable sustained power supplies with highly sensitive on-skin sensors and wireless transmission modules. This talk presents the challenges\, design strategies\, and novel fabrication processes behind a potential standalone stretchable device platform that (a) integrates with 3D curvilinear dynamically changing surfaces\, and (b) dissolves completely after its effective operation. The resulting device platform creates application opportunities in fundamental biomedical research\, disease diagnostic confirmation\, healthy aging\, human-machine interface\, and smart internet of things. \nShort biography: Dr. Cheng is the James L. Henderson\, Jr. Memorial Associate Professor of Engineering Science and Mechanics at Penn State University. His research group focuses on the design\, fabrication\, and application of the standalone stretchable device platform. Larry has co-authored more than 120 publications with total citations >15\,000 according to Google Scholar. His work has been recognized through the reception of numerous awards\, including the Humboldt Research Fellowship for Experienced Researchers\, 2022 Minerals\, Metals & Materials Society (TMS) Functional Materials Division (FMD) Young Leaders Professional Development Award\, 2021 NIH Trailblazer Award\, MIT Technology Review Innovators Under 35 (TR35 China) in 2021\, 2021 Scialog Fellow in Advancing BioImaging\, 2021 Frontiers of Materials Award from TMS\, Forbes 30 Under 30 in 2017\, among others. SUMMARY:High Throughput Automation of Synthetic DNA and RNA on Nanostructured Ceramic Films
DESCRIPTION:Fully synthetic oligonucleotides are critical in nearly all disciplines of modern biology and precision medicine. Synthetic Biology\, cell-free DNA (cfDNA) diagnostics\, mRNA vaccines\, interference RNA cancer therapeutics\, self-amplifying saRNA. Access to abundant\, high quality synthetic DNA and RNA at gram scales overnight could be a game changer for the future of healthcare and personalized medicine 1) reducing the time for the discovery of safe and effective biologics\, 2) significantly increasing the clinical Phase I pipeline success and 3) reaching profitability years in advanced to recover R&D costs. \nTypical commercial offerings for 500 ng of a single lyophilized gene take from 5 to 15 business days and cost over $2500 to produce. For even partial combinatorial libraries of mRNA biologics this process can become time consuming and prohibitable expensive. We will discuss how the use of nano-structured ceramic films enables the synthesis of hundreds of DNA genes in gram quantities overnight. Furthermore\, we will describe how these nano-structured ceramics can be manufactured without the use of expensive\, currently highly backlogged\, nanofabs through the use of conventional physical and chemical means. \n \nSpeaker: Mario Blanco\, PhD\, President & CEO \nBio: Dr. Blanco holds a PhD in Physical Chemistry from UCLA. After working in the chemical and software industry for 10 years he was recruited by Caltech and NASA/JPL as a Research Scientist  (1993-2010) and Senior Manager. SUMMARY:Like Driving a Car: Acquiring Quality SEM/FESEM Images in Different Situations
DESCRIPTION:Getting good SEM/FESEM images is dependent on both the sample conditions (conductivity\, bulk vs. thin film\, etc) and the instrument’s imaging parameters (e.g.\, beam voltage\, beam current\, working distance\, detector\, etc). Over the course of training and interacting with hundreds of different FESEM users Dr. Liu has observed the most important things a new user needs to know without overwhelming them with theory and trivial operational routines. This allows new users to conceptualize and visualize the electron beam behavior relative to the observed imaging. This webinar will simplify and explain the complex nature of SEM/FESEM imaging by drawing analogies to common things in everyday life such as writing with a pencil and driving a car. \n \nSpeaker: Bangzhi Liu\, PhD \nBio: Dr. Bangzhi received his Ph.D. from Michigan State University and worked as a postdoctoral research scholar in the department of Materials Science and Engineering at Penn State University. He is currently employed by Penn State Materials Research Institute as an assistant research professor. DESCRIPTION:As part of the ongoing Workforce for Industry 4.0 Webinar Series\, the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) will present the webinar “Community Colleges and ATE Programs Addressing Workforce for Industry 4.0.”  This event will take place on Friday\, February 4\, 2022\, from noon to 1:30 pm (EST). \nThe webinar will feature comments from ATE Program Director Celeste Carter\, a short talk by Stanley Black and Decker VP Marty Guay\, and a moderated panel featuring PIs from five ATE centers. DESCRIPTION:National Nanotechnology Day is an annual celebration featuring a series of community-led events and activities on or around October 9 to help raise awareness of nanotechnology\, how it is currently used in products that enrich our daily lives\, and the challenges and opportunities it holds for the future. This date\, 10/9\, pays homage to the nanometer scale\, 10–9 meters. \nPlanning for various events and activities is underway at schools\, universities\, and various organizations around the country. SUMMARY:Nano-Educators Topical Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:The Nano-Educators Topical Seminar Series continues this fall with topics covering lithography\, diffraction\, MEMS\, characterization tools\, microfluidics\, and self assembly. The fall offerings will be every Friday starting on Sept. 17th through Nov. 12th (skipping Oct. 22nd). Experts in their fields from around the country will be giving overviews of the topics\, resources and tips to share with students\, and a variety of simulations and demonstrations of the techniques and tools. Each seminar includes a two-hour discussion beginning at noon EST\, along with additional materials provided through a course management system. You can attend one\, some\, or all the topics.
