SUMMARY:Introduction to the Arduino Microcontroller
DESCRIPTION:May 31\, 2021 – 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM\nJune 1\, 2021 – 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM \nThis two-day short course will introduce you to the Arduino world. Participants will learn how to program the Arduino and do some easy activities and move into more advanced activities. Supplies will be shipped to participants ahead of time. There will be a max of 15 participants. \nPresenter: Abe Michelen \nArduino is “an open-source electronics prototyping platform based on flexible\, easy-to-use hardware and software\,” it is a popular open-source electronic board that is capable of controlling just about any hardware project. This two-day short course will introduce you to the Arduino world. \nActivities\nSeveral full projects will be introduced that you can use in your classroom activities. An Arduino board and a set of components will be distributed to the participants to be used in classes or hands-on activities. \n\nProgramming the Arduino. A general introduction to the C/C++ language (the language of the Arduino) will be covered. \nThe first activities will use LEDs to learn how to control external devices with the Arduino.\nMore advance activities. Once you know how to control LEDs and other basic components we will introduce several types of sensors and actuators and will program the microcontroller interact (read and write) with and control them.  Some of the actuators and sensors we will Some of the actuators and sensors we will use include:  Switches\, Potentiometers\, RGB LEDs\, Temperature sensors\, humidity sensors\, Optical sensors\, Distance ultrasonic sensors\, LCD displays\, Dot Matrix displays\, Servo motors\, DC motors\, Buzzers.

SUMMARY:Micro- Nano-Technology Health & Safety
DESCRIPTION:This professional development opportunity will educate and train participants on the anticipation\, recognition\, evaluation\, and control of hazards related to micro- and nano-technology (MNT). Due to the COVID-19 pandemic\, the program will be offered virtually in 2021. It will be facilitated for continuing education credit through the University of Minnesota Public Health Institute. The program will last for 4 days during a 1-week period\, for 4 hours/day\, a total of 16 hours. Topics for each day are currently planned to be (1) Occupational Hygiene Principles Applied to MNT\, (2) Measurement of Airborne and Colloidal MNT Particles\, (3) Preventing Exposures to MNT Particles\, and (4) Practical Applications of MNT Health and Safety Principles. \nPresenters: Dr. Peter Raynor and Dr. James Marti – University of Minnesota \nRegistration\n\nCapacity is limited to 14 participants on a first-come\, first-served basis.\nCommunity College faculty will have priority.\nTwo weeks prior to the session\, participants will receive an email to confirm their address so materials can be sent to them.
